On the evening of Sunday, November 29th, to mark the nearby International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, NS4P will be hosting a screening of “Soraida, a woman of Palestine,” at the Wild Bird Trust in North Vancouver.

Tickets must be purchased in advance - pay what you can, with all proceeds to be split as they are for cash donations at our outreach booth.
We will be serving cookies and tea! For those who wish to further explore the themes in the screening, we will be offering the chance to participate in some discussion, with guidance from Arwa Shurab, one of the leading Palestinian voices in our community. About the film
Filmed around 2004, by Canadian-Egyptian director Tahani Rached, in the West Bank city of Ramallah during the Second Intifada, this thought-provoking documentary takes us on a fascinating and intimate journey into a bygone era of the Palestinian struggle. Through candid conversations between Soraida and the people around her, we gain a surprisingly deep understanding of their lives and circumstances. We glimpse the personal struggle to reconcile the competing demands of being a mother, daughter, wife, friend, professional, and militant, all while trying to make sense of life under the unrelenting occupation and punishing curfews of the West Bank.
Watching this now, we cannot escape the knowledge that their context in 2004, when civilian collateral damage was the exception rather than the norm, might seem utopian to those who have survived it to the present day. They could scarcely have imagined the depths of cruelty to which their oppressors would descend, or the unimaginable suffering their own people would be forced to endure, and continue to endure.
On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Soraida’s story also invites us to reflect on the lives of women navigating overlapping forms of oppression, and on the courage required to assert their agency, dignity, and humanity in the face of them.
